Cherry Hill Car Accident Lawyers: Drivers in New Jersey Are Some of the Worst in the Country

Research has found that drivers in New Jersey are, according to some metrics, some of the worst in the entire country. In a list of the top 10 worst drivers in the nation compiled by SmartAsset.com, New Jersey came in 4th, only beaten by Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Florida. The researchers used data from the National Traffic Highway Administration to come to these conclusions.

Research Methodology

The list was compiled by first checking the percentage of insured drivers in the state. After that, the researchers checked DUI arrests per 1,000 drivers and vehicular-related fatalities per 1,000 drivers. In addition, they looked up Google trends on automobile ticket-related searches. While New Jersey does have a high rate of insured drivers at 90 percent, they also unfortunately had the second-most fatalities per driver, at 0.62.

 Accident Statistics in New Jersey

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), there were 249,715 car accidents in the year 2011 on municipal, county, state, interstate, and toll roadways. Most of these accidents were found to occur on municipal and county roads. Of them, 61,542 caused injuries and 554 resulted in fatalities. Distracted driving had been found to be a particularly significant issue in New Jersey car accidents. Over 3,000 of those crashes involved a distracted driver with a mobile phone or similar device.

In 2015, the NJDOT found that there were 542 fatalities from 501 accidents. This actually shows a slight reduction over the past 15 years. Much of the credit for this reduction was placed on awareness campaigns regarding distracted driving. Additionally, increased patrols cracked down on drivers using devices, as well as drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts. All of these measures could contribute significantly to a reduction. Unfortunately, the statistics still show a high chance for accidents in New Jersey.
